Hillside Landfill Update - OCTOBER 2007

The Western Phase is Complete

We are pleased to announce a significant milestone in the Hillside Landfill closure project. On September 30, we successfully closed the western one-third of the landfill for good.

This accomplishment is noteworthy because this part of the landfill has been a primary source of odors in the past. Because of that fact, we moved quickly and efficiently to close this section first. We are proud that we met this first goal on time and can now move on to close the remaining sections of the landfill by the spring of 2008.

Over the past five months, we filled the western one-third of the landfill to capacity, installed a new permanent gas collection system and constructed a cap that will keep rainwater out of the landfill. Together, these steps will control, contain and collect landfill liquid and gas that is created from decomposing landfill waste.

Although odors will not completely disappear until after the entire landfill is capped in 2008, we do expect to see an overall improvement now that the western section is closed. in the coming months, we will repeat the entire process detailed above in the remaining sections of the landfill.

As we've stated in the past, our closure plan does not place a band-aid over the existing problem, it fixes the problem. We thank you for your support and patience as we take the necessary steps to close the landfill next spring. We would also like to thank our neighbors for their ongoing cooperation and input throughout the process.

As the closure project progresses, we will continue to keep you updated. Also, please visit www.LandfillClosing.com for ongoing updates and information.

Thank you.
