The Hillside Landfill closure project is well underway and we wanted to give you an update on our progress.
Our first goal in this year-long closure process is to fill up the west portion of the landfill and then cap it. This section of the landfill has been the primary source of odors in the past.
In order to properly cap this section of the landfill, we are installing a trench system that will make sure that gas doesn't escape from the perimeter of the site now - and once the landfill closes next spring. The trench work on the west portion has begun and will be completed by the end of May.
Because we're digging this trench, we're uncovering older areas of waste and this means you are probably experiencing an increase in odors. Sometimes to make things better permanently, you have to make them worse temporarily.
That is what's occurring right now.
We regret the impact this may have on you. Again, we ask for your patience and understanding that this current work is a crucial step in the creation of a permanent odor control system that will be in place once the landfill is closed forever.
We will continue to keep you updated as the project continues. Also, please continue to visit www.LandfillClosing.com for new information about the project.
