As the Hillside Landfill closure project continues to move forward, we wanted to take a moment to give you an update on the latest work that is taking place.
Significant progress has been made on the far western part of the landfill (see phases 1 & 2 on the map below), and we are on track to meet our goal of permanently closing this section by September 30, 2007.
So far, a toe trench has been dug around the entire western perimeter of the site, which will help keep gas from escaping the boundaries of the landfill. A temporary tarp has also been lifted from the northwest corner and the entire area has been filled to capacity and is currently ready to be capped.
We have also begun work on an extensive, improved, permanent gas collection system. Over the last few weeks, we have drilled deep into the landfill and have installed 17 new vacuum wells. Later in July, we will install an additional 20 wells to complete the system in this section of the landfill. Once a final cap is in place, these wells will capture and pull out landfill gas and liquid that is created from decomposed waste.
In order to install these wells, it is necessary to dig 80 feet into existing waste. As a result, this project has - and will - create a temporary increase in odor. We regret any inconvenience this work may have on you. We appreciate your continued patience as we work to safely and permanently close the landfill and eliminate these odors once and for all.
We will continue to keep you updated as the closure process continues. Also, please visit www.LandfillClosing.com for ongoing project updates and to view a photo gallery of the current work being done.
Thank you.
